Blantyre in Malawi is a gem. There is much to do in and around Blantyre. One of the things that stands out about Blantyre is the kindness of the people, people will go to great lengths to give directions and show you around.

Food in Blantyre

Mijn Kitchen

Mijn Kitchen is a lovely quaint restaurant in Mandala Blantyre. It’s great for gathering with friends and for some quiet time alone as well.

Barista Cafe

The cafe is new in Blantyre right next to the new complex ttroad traffic in Blantyre.

Food Lovers

Food Lovers is located inside of Amaryllis hotel. It has a simple cafe with a hot foods section, a salad bar and a baked goods area. The establishment has a sit in area with a bar offering smoothies and ice cream. It is located in the Amaryllis Hotel shopping concourse.

Amaryllis Hotel

The Amaryllis hotel has a restaurant that serves lovely meals with a great view of the city. The establishment does not serve alcohol. The desserts are thoroughly enjoyable & the food fresh and made from scratch. The hotel building houses a shopping mall that includes food lovers so a great way to spend one’s time, is going through the

Mikos

Mikos is a dessert parlour in Ginnery Corner next to Chipiku. The parlor is in an unassuming little building but for those with a sweet tooth, it’s a dream come true. There are cake slices, waffles, cupcakes and much more.

Bombay Palace

Bombay Palace is my favorite Indian food restaurant in Blantyre, It has irregular operating hours though. They open for lunch from 12PM to 2PM and then open again from 6PM — 10PM for dinner. They offer indoor seating and ample parking is available.

Salt ’n’ Pepper

Salt ’n’ Pepper has a very diverse menu. In addition to an Indian food menu, they have fast food items like chips and chicken. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating.

Activities in & around Blantyre

Game Haven Lodge

Game Haven is a 30 minute drive from Blantyre and a great place to take young children along. It has a lovely restaurant and a playground right next to it. Right next to the area to enjoy a lovely braai is a watering hole where various animals come to drink water. In addition to this, one can enjoy a game drive within the estate and see giraffes, sables and different types of birds.

Satemwa Tea Estate

Satemwa tea estate is a must see for tea lovers. The estate houses Huntingdon House, a cosy boutique hotel. The restaurant offers a variety of different meals and some delicious tea infused drinks. The beautiful garden is a lovely place to spend a relaxed afternoon. There are walking tours offered as well as bicycles to ride through the estate. The estate offers tea tasting of all the teas produced on the estate and an educational history lesson on how the tea estate came to be. The restaurant has a set menu with a vegetarian option and a meat option.

Limbe Market

Limbe market is an adventure and you can find absolutely everything there. Seeds, clothing, shoes, car parts, absolutely everything. I love it for reasonably priced second hand clothing. Second hand intimate wear, carpets, and a lot more. There are vendors selling jackets (USD$1.50), dresses (US$1) and many other pieces of clothing and homeware. The market is very big but one can go through it in less than 4 hours. Right next to the market are companies selling printed cotton fabric, a favorite for African attires.

Blantyre Market

The Blantyre market is great for purchasing vegetables and fruit. Like the Limbe market, there is clothing but it is a little more expensive and has fewer stalls than the Limbe market. It’s also great for purchasing mops, brooms, dusters and other household cleaning items.
